Boat Roster

Please add boats & info and correct any errors, omissions, etc. by letting us know, and we'll update the list. We'd like to include pictures of all the boats, so if you have any you'd like to share here, please send them to us and we'll post them. Thanks!

Also, there are still lots of tugboats and workboats out there that we all see, but don’t know much more about. If you know someone who’s got a boat, fill us in and/or ask them to join us. We'd love to know more.

Click on boat name for more information, if available.

History/Notes: The ST2130's new hydraulic steering has proven itself time and time, again, along with the new AP25 autopilot. Sure has been a relief on my legs. Last year, circumnavigated Vancouver Island, taking 7 weeks exploring and picking up many treasures along the way. Only had one mishap, an unintentional slippage of the anchor while we were away, exploring in the skiff above Tofino. All's well - didn't go far, 'til it hooked, again!

Length: 65     Beam: 17.4     Draft:     Hull: wood
Built: 1937   Maritime Boat and Engine in Tacoma, WA for the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company
Power: Atlas Imperial Engine     HP: 160 HP
Other Equipment:
History/Notes: The SULTANA carries the name of the "Sultana" foodline of the old Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. Originally the SULTANA was designed and built specifcally for the shallow waters of Bristol Bay Alaska and owned by the Naket Packet Salmon Company operating as cannery tender or "Monkey Boat", working out of the Kvichak River salmon canneries of Bristol Bay, towing the 32 ft double end sailing commercial fishing vessels to and from the fishing grounds. The SULTANA was retired as a working tug approximately 1959 and eventually ending up in SanDiego and was then "Californicated", refitted, restored and made into a yacht. During the 1960s she cruised in California and Mexico. With a new owner the SULTANA returned to Southeast Alaska during the 1970s and part of the 1980s. By the mid 1980s she again changed hands and again went back south to Washington state where she remained until LaVern Beier purchased her in 1992. In an effort to preserve this rare piece of Alaska commercial fishing history during the years 2008-2011 the SULTANA has again been undergoing another restoration/refitting project. While maintaining her original character her rim timbers, horn timber, shearwater, sponson, guards and bullwarks were replaced while in Juneau Alaska.

Built: 1949   for Alaska Packers Assoc., Blaine, WA
Power: CAT D-343TA     HP: 300
Other Equipment: 5 kW Kohler gen.
History/Notes: THE STORY OF TUGBOAT TEAL

The motor vessel TEAL, a 42' x 12.5' x 7.5 classic Northwest Coast workboat, was designed in 1948 by Lorne Garden and Edwin Monk, Sr. and built by Alaska Packers Association at Blaine, Washington. She was named after that small, fast, strong North American duck common to the Northwest. TEAL was awarded her Official Number 257467 on April 7, 1949. She spent the next several years as far north as Kodiak and Chignik, out on the Alaska Peninsula, where she towed her company's schooners, salmon fish pots, and construction equipment.

Fred Filbert purchased TEAL in 1961 to tow logs from Port Angeles to Bellingham. He also used her for general towing service over the next 17 years throughout Puget Sound, Canada and Alaska. In 1962, Capt. Filbert replaced the original Atlas engine for a Caterpillar D343TA and upgraded the 48 propeller to 60 , giving TEAL the towing power of a much larger boat. She could tow over 30 sections of logs with little effort and was considered a fast towboat at the time, as recalled by Mr. Filbert's nephews, now captains for Foss Maritime.

Don Leonard purchased TEAL in 1979 and made her more livable for his family to enjoy while working with his Tacoma Tugboat Company. TEAL was sold again in 1992 and spent some time in Ketchikan, Alaska, before returning to Tacoma

The Kent's purchased TEAL in 1995 and devoted many hours and days to her complete refurbishment. Bob Ruch of Bainbridge Island purchased TEAL in 2008

TEAL can be found in maritime festivals and tugboat races from Olympia to Commencement Bay to Seattle, proudly honoring her Northwest heritage.
